Los Angeles (May 17, 2013) – Dr. Daniel Geschwind, a renowned autism scientist at UCLA, and director of the UCLA Center for Autism Research and Treatment (CART), was joined by Assemblymember Holly Mitchell (California’s 54th District), Los Angeles County Supervisor and Board Chairman Mark Ridley-Thomas, Special Needs Network (SNN) president Areva Martin, Esq. – who spearheaded this important conference, John Wagner, Chief Operating Officer for First 5 LA, and other community leaders and autism advocates for a press conference and discussion to highlight Dr. Geschwind’s National Institutes of Health (NIH) $13 million research grant to extend his genetic research to African American families – a population that has been overlooked by autism researchers. Nearly 100 people attended including news media.
