Meet Shaurya: Smiles and a Forehand in Oak Park

Some kids light up when they walk onto a tennis court. Shaurya Sheokand practically glows.

From the moment he arrives at ACEing Autism, there’s a quiet focus about him, the kind that says he’s ready. Ready to learn. Ready to move. Ready to challenge himself in a space that feels safe and welcoming.

Finding His Shot

When you ask Shaurya what he enjoys most about coming to sessions, his answer is simple and heartfelt. Learning how to play tennis and working with the amazing volunteers. That combination, skill-building and connection, is what keeps him coming back.

His favorite shot? The forehand. There’s something powerful about watching him step into it. You can see the concentration in his eyes, the coordination coming together, the follow-through growing stronger each week. It’s not just about hitting a ball. It’s about mastering something that once felt new and unfamiliar.

Encouragement That Builds Confidence

And the volunteers play a big part in that.

“They are always so welcoming, patient, and encouraging. They make the activity a lot of fun,” Shaurya says.

That warmth matters. It creates a space where effort is celebrated, where mistakes are part of the process, and where kids feel safe to try again.

For his mom, Shalini, the growth has been unmistakable.

“Shaurya absolutely loves going for his tennis lessons,” she shares. “He has gotten so good at it. We have also seen major improvement in his hand-eye coordination, his focus, instruction following, and working with others.”

But the impact goes even deeper than that.

A Community That Feels Like Home

At the Oak Park location, the volunteers and directors have created more than a program. They’ve built a community. “They make us feel so welcome, and a part of the community,” Shalini says. “They are so supportive and compassionate towards our autistic child.”

While Shaurya gains confidence and a new skill on the court, Shalini gains something too. The chance to connect with other parents. To share joys, challenges, resources, and encouragement. To feel understood.

When asked why other families should give ACEing Autism a try, Shaurya puts it best. It’s a great opportunity to learn a new skill, make friends, and be part of an amazing community.

Help open more courts for kids who are waiting.
